Groundnut Agricultural Commodities Production Prone To Drop 29 Percent Due To Inadequate Downpours

Yield Of Groundnut Agricultural Commodities To Decrease

India’s groundnut agricultural commodities yield from Kharif season crops is probably going to fall 29.2 percent from a year back to 3.74 million tonnes as scanty precipitation hit yields in the western territory of Gujarat.

Gujarat got 28 percent lower precipitation than typical rainfall it receives in the June-September monsoon season, as indicated by the India Metrological Department.

In Gujarat, groundnut yield has reduced to half from a year back to 1.6 million tonnes, the SEA (Solvent Extractors’ Association of India) said in an announcement.

The decline in yield could compel the world’s greatest edible oil importer to increase overseas purchases in the 2018-19 marketing year beginning from November 01, 2018.

USDA estimates 2018/19 India’s groundnut agricultural commodities production at 4.7 million metric tons, down by 18 percent from a month ago and down by 29 percent from a year ago.

The month-to-month drop of more than 1 million tons is because of the reduced area and lower yields originating from dry season conditions in the fundamental peanut cultivating region of Kutch in northwestern Gujarat.

Gujarat represents 40 percent of India’s aggregate groundnut cultivation amid the kharif season. Over half of Gujarat’s groundnut production is amassed in the Kutch region. Combined precipitation in the Saurashtra and Kutch districts was down 33 percent from the average rainfall usually received in these areas during this season, according to commodityonline.

Hence, India’s groundnut production is likely to fall from that of the past year as scanty rainfall hit yields in the western territory of Gujarat, a chief trade body said on October 22, 2018, as reported on BusinessLine.

Groundnut agricultural commodities are cultivated in India in two growing seasons – kharif and rabi. The kharif crop is planted in late June and harvested in October, while the rabi crop is planted from late October to January and harvested in April. The kharif groundnut yield accounts for 85 percent of the total groundnut yield.
