New Electron Cash coinsplit tool with support for both OP_CDSV and OP_MUL released!

Here (source only, for now): https://github.com/markblundeberg/coinsplitter_checkdatasig/releases/tag/3.3.1CSplus

There has been a lot of focus lately on the opcode OP_CHECKDATASIGVERIFY which can be used to make ABC-only transactions -- a property used in the previous release of my coin splitting tool. In the spirit of Electron Cash's support of both chains, today I'm releasing an update that helps you use an SV-only opcode, OP_MUL.

I strongly suggest that only experts use the OP_MUL tool, for technical reasons:

  • The MUL variant of the splitter is slightly less flexible in that disabled opcodes prevent creation of a 'refund' branch in script. So, the 1000 satoshis you send to the splitting contract will be semi-permanently unspendable on the ABC chain, until a future date when OP_MUL gets enabled.
  • By carefully using both the CDS tool and the MUL tool, you can create a full two-way split that lets you immediately start transacting on both chains without fear of replay attacks. However, doing this in a properly attacker-immune way will require a deep understanding of the UTXO aspect of bitcoin.

See previous announcement and user guide for more info (user guide has not yet been updated to match this release, however the minor differences in usage should be obvious).

Note: Most users who want to split coins do not even need to use coin splitting tools like this, and can obtain already-split coins from many services such as cryptocurrency exchanges. I have released this tool mainly to help advanced users (including exchange operators) to control their coins independently of other services.

Electron Cash users -- beware of lagging servers! (ElectrumX server owners -- check your server!)

The recent 32 MB blocks have revealed a lockup issue in the ElectrumX server software, that randomly affects some servers but not others. As a result, several servers have gotten stuck on block 556048. If you are connected to such a server you will notice a few things:

  • Orange network status icon in bottom right.
  • "Server is lagging" in status bar.
  • If you open the Network dialog you will see the blockchain height disagrees with your selected primary server.

Electron Cash normally tries to switch away from lagging servers so you probably have not have noticed anything, however such switching would not occur if you have manually selected a server. If you are stuck on a lagging server, you will not see recent transaction history and transactions you make may fail to broadcast.

It looks like Neil Booth (ElectrumX maintainer) has a fix in the pipeline and it should be released soon in ElectrumX 1.8.12. I will also keep the ABC/BU/XT-compatible ElectronX variant up-to-date. For now, affected ElectrumX server owners can work around the problem by simply restarting the software.

Bitcoin Cash Wallet by Hash Engineering will be taken off Google Play

We created the Bitcoin Cash Wallet app to allow users of Bitcoin Wallet by Andreas Schildbach to access their BCH after August 2017. Maintaining the app and supporting the users takes a large commitment and we don’t have the resources to support it. Recently, even today, there was a bug that prevented sending and receiving after a block was mined with over 4,000 transactions. We were able to quickly issue a fix that will hopefully prevent more users from experiencing this issue, but we can’t guarantee that will be the case in the future.

On November 15, there will be the network upgrade and what happens with this app is not known. Theoretically it will follow the longest chain of SV or ABC.

Therefore, we will soon be taking this app off the Google Play Store since users are storing actual value in the app and we don’t have time to support it.
