Getting started in BCH development

What are some services and tools that help boost BCH development experience? I am looking to build services around adoption and usability. I specialize in app development. Any suggestions?

Thank you Bitcoin. This was always in the back of my mind, my emergency fund just incase i couldn't take it anymore. It worked.

Nominating Satoshi for Nobel Prize in Economics

It's time. Has any figure in our lifetime done more to advance the field of economics than Satoshi? Most past winners dedicate their lives to explaining facets of economic theory. Valuable for sure, but Satoshi built an entirely new system with a remarkably succinct whitepaper that has been proven over a decade to be stable, effective, and has revolutionized the way hundreds of millions interact with money/value. He should be rewarded, even if we never know who they are.

The New Bitcoin Four Year Cycle

The New Bitcoin Four Year Cycle

A new Bitcoin Four Year Cycle has begun...

The most exponential, explosive growth in Bitcoin's price tends to occur in the first year of its new cycle.

Bitcoin is currently in Candle 1.

Why do Four Year Cycles form?

The Bitcoin Halving events tend to occur several months prior to a new Four Year Cycle starting.

The Halvings are marked in blue below:

The Bitcoin Halving tends to act as a major catalyst for a new Bitcoin Bull Market and precedes exponential growth to new All Time Highs.

Do people talk about bitcoin now the same way that people talked about the internet in the 80s and 90s?

I feel like there are a lot of parallels and they are both equally polarizing.

In the 80s and 90s, there were many on the right side of history who predicted the internet would completely revolutionize the way we live.

On the other side, there were people like Paul Kaufman, who infamously said in 1998: The growth of the Internet will slow drastically, as the flaw in 'Metcalfe's law'–which states that the number of potential connections in a network is proportional to the square of the number of participants–becomes apparent: most people have nothing to say to each other! By 2005 or so, it will become clear that the Internet's impact on the economy has been no greater than the fax machine's."

There are equally powerful voices talking about bitcoin now. Musk, Saylor, etc. on one side, then Buffet, Schiff, etc. on the other.

Do you think it’s the same situation where bitcoin’s impact on society will be beyond what any of us could ever imagine?

After many years at looking at BTC and BCH, I can finally see the advantages and benefits of BCH that BTC does not have.

BCH is very practical if we are in for the original manifesto of Satoshi. No doubt BCH would actually become bigger than BTC once people start to realize the benefits like I did.

Taproot Activation - Pools will be able to veto again? Seriously?

So it seems likely that we will be doing this in such a way as to give a small group of miners the ability to veto this upgrade - and thus put us in a situation identical to activating segwit where we have to scramble together a UASF to force them to signal the upgrade before timeout.

Right now everyone is saying "lol it won't happen that way this time. The miners all approve of taproot it's not controversial like segwit was, and also they wouldn't try that shit again. Bitmain is rekt. blah blah."

This is so painfully naive and it's downright stupid not to learn our lesson from last time.

Firstly: even if they are honest about wanting taproot now, they might change their minds.

Secondly: if they are dishonest then we are playing ourselves - and we definitely shouldn't be assuming honesty. What happened to don't trust, verify? We can't verify here so we shouldn't be trusting either.

Thirdly: What about coercion? Governments aren't big fans of privacy upgrades. Pools may be forced to withdraw signalling by authorities.

Fourthly, and most importantly: Taproot is a controversial upgrade! It significantly improves privacy in bitcoin by making MAST transactions indistinguishable from normal transactions (in cooperative instances). This means, for example, that transactions where one is closing a channel on the Lightning Network will appear to be completely normal transactions, making censorship of transactions by type impractical.

Also consider that we had no idea that an unknown like ASICBOOST was going to end up being the reason for a controversy that had no technical basis (the blocksize 'debate') and seemed to make no sense when analyzing incentives - that is until we found out that BITMAIN needed to maintain their hidden advantage - and segwit (at least if the advantage was to remain hidden) needed to be a hardfork instead of a softfork. Even that got politicized to the point where King Vitalik of Ethereum pushed for the hardfork just to add to our confusion and the general chaos out of pure malice. The confusion that a MINER would be fighting to make blocks larger makes no sense as the scarcity of blockspace is increasingly the source of their income.

With taproot, who knows what hidden agendas are going to surface? I have no intention of finding out and with this upgrade - as has been pointed out by Luke-Jr - is: if we don't want the thing activated for 100% sure, why are we doing this at all? And if we do - why are we modifying BIP8 to have that same critical weakness that BIP9 had - giving miners veto power?

BIP8 specifically means that if the miners don't activate the softfork voluntarily before timeout, activation happens anyway.

From what I can gather, it seems to me that the wind is blowing in favour of modifying BIP8 so that we get some of the other benefits (activation deadline is a blockheight, not a time, meaning that if we do have to do an emergency UASF, at least we don't have to worry about a drop in hashrate causing us to sail past the deadline without having activated), BUT we give miners the power of veto, that if they decide to use, we will then have to UASF. Which is just WTF. If we are serious about it, why give them veto power in the first place? Just make it essentially a UASF from the beginning and then so much potential chaos and politics can be avoided!

lockinontimeout = true

The above code is us learning our lesson.

I know everyone wants to not stall anymore and just YOLO at this point, but I think we're going about it the wrong way.

Please don't give the miners the option to do any more than delay the upgrade. A successful UASF in retaliation is not inevitable in the case that one pool with - say - 11% of the hashrate decides not to activate. (Activation threshold unknown at this point - that would prevent activation if requirement is 90% or greater.)

Cold wallets

Trezor 1?

You guys recommend the trezor 1? After seeing some things about a ledger leak, my research has pointed Trezor to be the next best device. Wanted to know your thoughts. n00b question inbound I’ve watched a setup video and done some research but just wanted to confirm.

When transferring funds to my trezor, the device needs to be plugged into my pc (sorry if some of you cringed me asking that lmao)

The trezor can hold multiple cryptos within the same wallet (ie same pass/seed words) but creating multiple wallets is also a feature if you wanted to keep them separate?

Should I just go all out and get the model T, or will the one be sufficient in your opinion?

if the device was ever damaged let’s say in a flood or house fire. Are my funds completely lost?

any important info I should know before owning a cold wallet? Ik keep my seed words safe ;)

Thanks very much guys, us newcomers do really appreciate your help. A month ago I knew nothing and the more I learn the more I think how did I not get on board with this sooner (and that perspective is not from a monetary one)

Cheers

Centralized vs decentralized

Just looking to expand my knowledge. I know one thing people talk about is how Bitcoin is decentralized in the manner that it can’t be diluted or take over by a small group of people. I get Bitcoin cash fees are cheaper, but how sure are we that the supply won’t be diluted like fiat or other alt coins? And does roger ver still have a lot of control over it? Thanks

This will be unpopular because "not your keys, not your coins", but just a thought I had - earn interest on your BCH

BCH needs to participate more in DeFi and CeFi if you want more price movement on the coin. As much as everyone hates to admit it, 1% of BTC does not feel good. Yes of course using it is great, detoken (if it worked for me), noise.cash, payments, Kim, etc, etc. but so is earning interest on it.

Nexo, Celsius and crypto.com all pay interest on BCH holdings. The reason I say that this is good, is that if you receive interest in kind, in BCH, they have to buy BCH from the market to give to you. You can grow your holdings doing nothing, and BCH price goes up. For DeFi there is renBCH, I haven't looked into what can be done with that but it's tradeable on Uniswap so you could provide liquidity there for example.

As controversial as Bitfinex is, they provide the clearest view of where the interest comes from. I have BCH, someone wants to borrow BCH to trade with it. There is a market rate and I lend it out at that price. People on here claim that "they" keep shorting BCH and that's what keeps the price down. Well, this is how you take money from "them" and they can continue to do what they were going to do anyway.

Maybe if bitcoin.com offered interest on their margin trading that would be great.

I've used all the platforms so let me know if you have any questions.

RISK:

Of course, "not your keys, not your coins" applies so be careful. I've mentioned 3 companies which seem quite large and secure but you never know. There have been plenty of hacks and scams over the years. Most recently, CRED was even partnered with bitcoin.com and went bankrupt. So don't invest everything you have.

Honestly, what is Hathor's problem?

Does someone have an actual answer? Are they malicious? Do they just not give a shit? Does not processing transactions fractionally increase the speed at which they can broadcast blocks?

Fuck these guys. For serious.

I know, I know, this is part of the reality of decentralization but like...if they're going to bother to mine it you'd hope they wouldn't be so aggressive about trying to damage the utility of the chain they're looking to profit from.

Follow up - is there an obvious way to discourage such bad actors without massive code changes or opening up new attack vectors?

Bitcoin to Electrum from Coinbase

I downloaded Electrum software today after a tip to move my bitcoin to a wallet. I found it very easy to do. My initial purchase of Bitcoin was 2.5 or 3.5 years ago, and it has gone up quite a lot in value of USD. So I wanted to protect it. I guess I was lucky that what I had left in coinbase was still there.

Anyway my main question is I read that I should backup my wallet. How do you do that? I don't have a clue where Electrum stores the wallet. I had trouble finding how to even open electrum after initially installing it.

Another question I have is at what amount of money do you think it reasonable to store using electrum... when is it worth spending money to store my bitcoin.

One other topic: I bought a very small amount of ethereum and dogecoin this week ($25 and $20). I have to get wallets for that too? I used the Voyager app to buy these but I don't think I want all these different wallets. Should I just convert these to BTC?

Sorry for all these questions but I bought bitcoin a few years back and paid no attention to it. Now I am trying to be more serious about it and am having a lot of trouble getting my head around it all.

I feel completely confident that Bitcoin will outperform all major stock indexes over at least the next 10-15 years, and this is the only way to invest retirement funds in Bitcoin until a Bitcoin ETF becomes available (probably not for a while).

If anyone needs help figuring out how to do this, let me know! I think it's a great investment.

NOT SELLING. NO MATTER WHAT.

You can't make this shit up.

How isn't Lightning Network not the center focus of bitcoin?

Lightning Network has improved SO much. My experience with LN has been so good and easy.

Wallets like Phoenix are so simple, users doesn't have to care about any technical details.

There was barely any LN back in 2017. If there's a surge in bitcoin price, LN and community around it is the only thing I can assign this value to.

How are we not talking about it?

EDIT: I'll add some advantages that makes LN special

  • Improved privacy. Onchain level suffers a lot from privacy leakage.

  • Scalability

  • Low fees

  • Great community: Many merchants and businesses involved with an excellent bunch of open source builders.

  • Staggering amount of innovation and ideas in mailing lists and forums.

What are the possible outcomes from the NYAG Tether (USDT) verdict?

(I always get the feeling USDT is not discussed as much as it should be).

I thought there was going to be a verdict in January. Coingeek article says there should be a verdict this month.

Is the worse case a fine, or could there be something more which could cause it to go off the 1:1 peg like it had to 0.85 in 2018 and/or destabilize the crypto exchanges?

Just got a call from a "Mary" a foreign accent woman who has a great investment opportunity in cryptocurrency. Started off by asking me whats my experience trading and after telling her I was broke and homeless due to covid, she directly said I know you have cryptocurrency. This is crazy, I really hope there this a class-action lawsuit against the Ledger.

Getting mass BTC adoption!

Lately I've been posting things for sale on Craigslist/FB groups/etc. I always will list the item for its $USD amount first, but then offer a % discount if they pay in BTC. This helps get the narrative out there that BTC is a legitimate currency, and people will do their own research since buying with BTC helps give them a discount instead of paying in cash.

The trick is to list the item in cash a bit higher than what you actually want to sell for. Say you want to sell an item for $100, what you do is list it for $120 but say that you will also take $100 in BTC only.

If we can get more people doing this, it could help spread mass adoption!

I bought Bitcoin through Binance once. Now they won't stop spamming me.

There was a post on the crypto reddit which reminded me of this issue, as my problem is exactly the same.

After signing up to Binance they send you marketing emails about new tokens... okay fair enough.

But then if you unsubscribe and/or mark them as spam/block them, Binance will send you marketing emails from a different sudomain to bypass the block.

I think this is illegal, and is a really shady practice. We should tell them to stop doing this.

Get ready. Guggenheim is now cleared for investment in GBTC. $500 Million.

“The $310 billion global investment firm Guggenheim Partners is finally able to put up to 10 percent of its Macro Opportunities Fund into shares of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust to garner indirect exposure to the world's largest cryptocurrency.

Its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission—which was first disclosed back in late November—has now come into effect.”

If the difficulty of transacting BTC lends to its "Store of Value", please note that Bitcoin Cash also has one of the most advanced forms of being able to "not be spent". Every wallet has this feature - its a button called "Send" - to activate this feature, do not press it.

GameStop stock craze is basically a $20+ billion ad for Bitcoin

Bitcoin represents a system where censorship is impossible, with no bias, no favoritism, no handouts, and no money printing.

Bitcoin was designed from the ground up to be decentralized money. There is zero ability for the network to be manipulated, for decisions to be made unilaterally, or to have any of its users censored.

In essence, it is money designed for a true democracy.

The last bitcoin will take 40 years to mine

The last bitcoin will take 40 years to mine

Starting at block 5,040,000 the block reward (the coinbase transaction) for each block will be only 0.00000298 BTC. And will continue to halve every 4 years ending in the year 2140.

Over these last ~40 years (38 probably more accurate), only 1 BTC TOTAL will be mined.

Consider yourself lucky to be here in Reward Era #4.
