Thank you to r/Bitcoin from all the Noobs in 2020!!!

Just wanted to thank all the crusty ol' veterans who take the time to answer the same stupid question over and over again. This is genuinely the only financial community that doesn't feel like it everyone lurking is trying to rip you off, or shill their latest scam.

I know I still have a lot to learn, but having this place as a resource is amazing.

Happy Solstice, New Year and anything else you may enjoy. See you all in a (hopefully much improved 2021!)

FinCEN Regulation MegaThread - Make Your Voice Heard - Wish Mnuchin a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

This thread will be stickied until January 3rd - which is also the deadline for comment on the new FinCEN rules & regulations.

Dear r/Bitcoin

I’m Blowing the Horn

The regulators are here, and they want to make things more difficult for the ecosystem. Make no mistake, the new proposed FinCEN rules are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give them Hell for trying to sneak in some last minute shenanigans, at the 11th hour, of an outgoing administration, during Christmas. (A cowardly act, no matter your political affiliation).

This subreddit has more than 1,840,000 subscribers, many of whom are lawful American citizens, voters, taxpayers & Bitcoin enthusiasts.

So make some noise, but be respectful and professional if and when you do.

Be sure to let them know that it's not worth risking Republican control of the Senate over Mnuchin's personnel vendetta against Bitcoin.

At the time of posting this thread there have been 284 comments made. Lets get that to 2100.

This thread will help host information & options for community members to make their voices heard on these new draconian rules. If you have any ideas on this action, please leave a comment. I’ll try to update it with more options and information as they become available.

Some good background on this:

Everyone Should read this one: https://twitter.com/jchervinsky/status/1340135040399904770

Letter Template to Send Mnuchin Your Thoughts, Keep it Professional Please:

https://coincenter.good.do/fincen/fincen-email/

You can also submit your Feedback to: Policy Division, Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, P.O. Box 39, Vienna, VA 22183. Refer to Docket Number FINCEN-2020-0020 RIN number 1506-AB47

AND: Kenneth A. Blanco Director Financial Crimes Enforcement Network via https://www.fincen.gov/contact

Rumor is, the Office of Management and Budget has the final say on these FinCEN rules, so be sure to submit a copy of your comments there too:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/

https://twitter.com/RussVought45

Closing Thoughts and Strategy:

It's probably more important to leave a comment on the actual proposed rules, then to send Mnuchin a letter he won't read. But both are encouraged. In addition, the Office of Management and Budget angle might be the best place to target. Please submit your comments respectfully and professionally to as many of the available avenues for comment and feedback as possible. But do not spam or be disrespectful in your conduct. Please also contact your local senator and congressman for wider effect.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everyone.

There are only 589 comments on FinCENs horrible new proposed rule of "wallet registrations" for self-custodial wallets. AMERICANS: TELL THEM WHY IT SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED, BEFORE JAN 4. Make sure to read the extremely important tips in this post 1st. Yes, they do read & carefully consider every comment

If you're from another country, do not comment. It's for Americans only.

It's also very important that you read all of the tips in this thread first, before commenting. Your comment will be read by lawyers and regulators. Poorly written comments are worse than no comments at all. At minimum, every American can use the template provided in the above thread (tweet #13), or, if you are knowledgeable, you can leave your well-written comment without a template directly with FinCEN here (click the green "Submit a formal comment" button).

After you have done that, you can (and should) also send a letter directly to Treasury Secretary Mnuchin here (comes with an optional template).

If anyone is interested, the CoinCenter spent 3 days writing a 34 page detailed analysis of why this rule is so flawed; a short summary of which can be found here (full 34 pages here). The proposed rule includes such idiocy as providing the name and physical address of the person who controls the wallet you're sending to when withdrawing over $3,000 from an exchange.

The deadline for submissions is January 4th. If you use a template, make it your own. A simple way to make a template more personalized is to say something like "My name is XX and everything in the below letter I agree with. I am submitting this because everything in it is spot on and it will absolutely affect the sphere negatively, especially seeing how other countries are already ahead of the US. It will affect me personally because XX." etc. etc.

I’m sure some of you have figured this out

You should only have BTC right now in your wallet and though 2021. I went back through the year and I had some Alt coins that were winners and some that were losers and some that didn’t move at all. if I just kept it all in BTC I would be 30 to 50% more profit. Problem is when BTC moves Alts go down either way... BTC always wins.

Why investors are buying at 23K

I have seen many posts asking who would buy now. Or If hedge funds are so smart why didn't they buy before. Here is why

Individuals:

  1. Just heard of it. 2.DCA
  2. Stigma has gone down. So they are adding.
  3. Earning more fiat but nowhere to put it. Real Estate too expensive, stocks too frothy (overvalued eg Tesla pe of 1300)

Institutions:

  1. Stigma has gone down.
  2. Marketcap big enough to be of interest. You will not see large funds getting involved with Microcaps sometimes even small caps. They need liquidity.

I am probably missing many other reasons, feel free to add.

The tx rate is absolutely a problem for BTC's store of value proposition, even with large actors replacing the normal users

Bitcoin (BTC) has a transaction rate of about 15000/h or about 4 tx/s. It is the max transaction rate, and it is exhausted with the current usage, and has been for four years, leading to the queues, recently 200000 tx waiting in the queue called the mempool.

The rate is artificially capped there, and the mechanism to do it is the blocksize of about 1.7 MiB (obviously also the block rate which is 6/h, but nobody wants to change that).

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) has no constraints, only the laws of nature, and temporarily also the limits of hardware and software. Our tx rate is 19 times higher currently, or 77 tx/s, with plans, people and resources to increase it, the work is ongoing. No consensus change is needed (low risk of split), but most of the node implementations need to synchronize the changes in the chat protocol to make it happen. (The nodes communicate with each other using the chat protocol)

The queues lead to users bidding up the tx fee to come to the top of the queue, with transactions often costing 2-5 USD (median) over extended periods lately. With expected inflow of users, which can take the coin price to 100kUSD or even 500kUSD, even the hedgefunds can be discouraged by the fees, except the very largest. Normal users will be pushed out, and sometimes without the opportunity to sell all of their value (depending on the size of the tx outputs or coins they own).

Increased requirements for hardware; storage, computing power and network, will keep some actors out of mining, but there will be plenty. There is not only the Google search engine, not only the Facebook social medium, not only the Amazon internet vendor. But to our advantage, the market for mining is one of the freest imaginable, with little government intervention (some taxes, some intrusion in the power price, some bullying) The internet giants referred to, can in fact take advantage of government intrusion in the form of antitrust laws or competition laws or anti-monopoly laws (properly misnomed to give the impression of giving increased competition, while the opposite is true). The near free market in bitcoin mining means that there will be many miners, and many more potential miners.

I havent told anyone yet and I am about to burst

Throwaway for various reasons. I have not told many people about my stash of BTC. For the crypto people in my life, they are all sitting on shit coins and bag holding. So I havent told them because I dont want them to feel bad. And for the rest of the people i know, they are struggling and on unemployment etc . So i cant really go "hey buddy guess what i finally made it, even though you never will"

Long story short I have been a bitcoin millionaire for about a week. became a millionaire before i hit age 40, which was a goal of mine. I am so excited and happy and have really no one to share this with.

Kind of just want to briefly tell my Journey in bullet format

  • 2015 bought my first coins. Immediately sent them to a ponzi scam and lost them
  • 2016 Was trading Alt coins and investing Ponzis. Lost about 29 btc total so far in my Jouney
  • 2017 Sold all 20 of my remaining bitcoin at $2500. immdiatly became suicidal when it went to 4k with no pull back. I bought back in with 8 btc
  • from 2017 onwards, i had BTC PTSD. Was depressed and going crazy. Decided to become a minimalist. Quit smoking weed (for a year). Quit buying guitars and other crap i didnt need. Started cooking my own food. Spent every penny of my paycheck I could on bitcoin. dollar cost averaging, buying the dip, taking out loans during the bear market, working 2 jobs, working overtime. Spending every second of my day looking at the chart.
  • 2018-2020 -every day I purchased bitcoin. Somedays $1, other days a couple grand. birthday money went to bitcoin. christmas money went to bitcoin. Never sold a single sat.

This post wasnt really meant to brag, got no where to go but strangers on the internet. Hopefully it inspires someone to realize it still isnt too late for you to do the same thing

Bitcoin cash is bullish

Hello!

There are a lot of bearish sentiment (sounds actually like a buying opportunity - buy low sell high). However, is it justified? As long as it does not make new lows (all time low is 75 dollars) and it keeps making higher highs (previous high November 24th was 371.70 usd/bch on bitstamp and the most recent one a couple days ago at exactly 380 usd/bch on bitstamp). It rises slowly but surely. Over time it will accelerate because it is the mechanics of the markets. When people will catch the trend, they will jump in and it goes up in steeper slope, which attracts new people in and the slope gets even steeper until it over heats and we will have a blow off top.

Only 15 hours left to complete the Flipstarter for a new system to help RoyalTiffany continue spreading adoption

I must say this has been quite a bit harder to complete than I thought. I no longer have contact info for most of her old regulars and I can't use twitter without her finding out about it. Trying to keep it a surprise. So far about 3 BCH have been contributed with just over 1 more BCH confirmed but not sent yet. It would be nice to get this completed. If you would like to contribute you can do so here: http://flipstarter.fubar.org

If the campaign isn't complete another will be started after Christmas for a lower amount (wasn't expecting BCH to jump in price that fast). So far what has been pledged will be given to her even if the campaign isn't complete. The few contributors are just going to send it to her anyway. The next one if necessary will be for the remaining amount.

Thank you to anyone that contributes.

Am I the only one who remembers when bitcoin was strictly used for illegal services such as the Silk Road?

Just been wondering. I remember the first bitcoin I ever bought was $73 dollars. And bitcoin was just as scarce as people’s knowledge to the deep web and the only way of acquiring bitcoin was setting up an overseas bank account where it would take weeks to even buy one

Bitcoin isn't the bubble. Everything else is.

Bitcoin isn't the bubble.

Everything else is.

Excess value is being stored/saved where it shouldn't.

Assets are valuable either because they're scarce (hard to make more of) and large networks of people want or need them (gold, land, easy to remember web addresses, trademarks, desirable art, bitcoin, even well managed fiat) or because they generate income (businesses, rental properties, bonds, loans, tax payers, employees, your own ability to work and get paid).

The stock market has become distorted because everyone has realized that cash is trash and savings accounts yield 0 interest. So, we've all started dumping our savings into the market to preserve wealth. This is increasingly detaching the market value of stocks from reasonable expectations of income generation relative to the asset value. e.g. how many years will it take to recoup your initial investment and then some from dividend payouts? Some people are starting to think that index fund investing is the next big bubble to pop. I don't know if I'm convinced of that yet, but it's a compelling narrative.

Meanwhile, assets that are scarce and in demand are constantly under attack by human ingenuity to make them less scarce or less in demand.

  1. We're mining more gold in absolute numbers every year than any point in human history, at 2% per year. Asteroid/deep sea mining on the horizon might mine it even faster.
  2. We're starting to use land more efficiently. Vertical farming. Lab grown meat. Remote work + digital social revolution. Dense housing. Seasteading. etc.
  3. Web namespace has expanded with new top level domains. Apps don't even need a URL.
  4. It's always been hard to detect conterfeit art. 3d imagining and other technologies are probably making it harder.
  5. Fiat is getting inflated away as the money printer goes brrrrr.

I could go on. This is not to say these things won't continue to have value, because they will. They all still have utility. But they're commodities. Commodities aren't good stores of wealth, because humans will never stop trying to figure out how to eliminate scarcity, and we're really damn good at it.

Bitcoin is the only perfectly scarce thing to ever exist. It achieves this because it's scarcity isn't rooted in the physical world. It's scarcity is memetic. It's scarce because we all agree that it's scarce. Anyone is allowed to try and fork it to make it less scarce, but they're fighting game theory and a swarm of cyber hornets that will engage in the raging meme wars over digital gold supremacy that will leave attackers broke. Better to just buy some bitcoin and join the party.

And because it's perfectly scarce, it can absorb excess value that's currently over inflating other assets beyond their reasonable value. But, in order to fulfill this purpose for 8 billion humans, it needs to be worth $10s or $100s of trillions, not $450 billion.

Don't trust.

Verify.

My message to all BCH haters

Hello!

I have encountered a lot of BCH haters here.

They post negative stuff on BCH and think it will dump into oblivion.

If you think so, why do you post it here? Just act upon your conviction and short bch. On Poloniex it is possible to short bch/btc trading pair. If you end up being right, you will make tons of money next year. If you are wrong, then your position gets burned.

Personally, I do not like people who simply troll. If you disagree, just act upon it and make profits. If you disagree and act on it by shorting bch then I appreciate it because your money is where your mouth is, too.

Some lightning network stats

Recently I was introduced to this site when someone apparently decided to look through my profile to reply to a comment buried in an unpinned daily thread on r/cryptocurrency to tell me bcash is a scam because LN has more nodes.

I decided to look at what it says about the lightning network, and apparently over 10% of channels are connected to 3 nodes, and over half are connected to just 32. That site didn’t show the median amount of channels, so I looked here. The median amount of channels is only 2, and at least 10% of LN nodes only have one channel.

That doesn’t really look like a decentralized network to me.

Also, something interesting I found when I looked at the profile of the person who replied to me to try to find out why they would be replying to that comment - at one point on r/bitcoin I commented about the censorship from 2015 and someone kept telling me that I didn’t understand consensus because it’s determined by the nodes (not miners or users/businesses who decided which chain to accept or give value, non-mining nodes that relay transactions). The person who responded to me today apparently also didn’t get that and got into a very long argument with the other core troll where they both kept calling each other BCash trolls.

You know how rich people buy up property and let it sit vacant? Bitcoin fixes that.

Cash is trash.

Everyone is struggling to find places to store and diversify their wealth.

Extremely rich people understand this better than anyone. That's part of why they're rich. But they're struggling like everyone else is to find where to put the money to keep it out of cash. Beyond owning things like stocks and bonds, which carry risk, they also put money in other things like property, rare art, gold, etc, which inflate the valuation of those assets beyond anything reasonable. It doesn't even necessarily have to beat inflation, just dull it down.

This is part of why we see lots of real estate getting bought up above asking price with cash and sitting vacant or lightly used. Earning income as a rental or serving as a residence isn't the point. Storing and diversifying wealth is.

Bitcoin fixes this because it's the only store of value that can absorb infinite amounts of excess value without being subject to debasement. Gold can't do this. Land can't do this. Rare art can't do this.

Only bitcoin.
