Understanding Censorship resistance in POW

With the upcoming transition of another unnamed network to Proof of Stake there has been a lot of discussion around transaction censorship.

Can someone help me with a description of what the risks are within Proof of Work with regards to censorship? What are the key mechanisms that will keep censorship at bay if top miners and pools decide to start censoring transactions? Is it a cut and dry 50% of miners must be publishing all blocks? Or if 90% of the blocks are coming out censored does it fall to user nodes to continue validating those transactions?

Comments and resources appreciated. Thanks!

Should I make my project on Bitcoin?

So I have a school project which is called an EPQ(Extended Project Qualification) is, to put it simply, a BIG independent project for which you’ll earn a qualification. I will have to write a 5000 word paper. A very long piece of paperwork about my research and how I approached it. I will also have to make a presentation of around 30 to 40 minute. I’v know about crypto for a while but I never really understood what it was on a fundamental level, so I thought about “what is Bitcoin” as a topic to understand everything.

South African Reserve Bank Supports Friendly Crypto Operations

South African Reserve Bank Supports Friendly Crypto Operations

According to the banking regulator, minimizing risk by disconnecting crypto-related consumers may represent a "threat" to financial integrity. The Reserve Bank of South Africa's Prudential Authority advised its subsidiaries to avoid illegal activity, asking banks not to terminate all links with bitcoin.

It implied that such an act might pose a higher risk in the long term. Prudential Authority CEO Fundi Tshazibana signed the formal notification. Certain South African banks have already severed links with crypto asset service providers (CASPs), as referred to in the letter, due to unclear laws or a high-risk component. However, the ...

PayPal Adds Support for Bitcoin in Mobile App

California-based fintech giant PayPal adds cryptocurrency features to its mobile app. Starting from August 15, the application users can easily buy, sell, and transfer several cryptocurrencies: Ethereum, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin.

According to the official website, the funds remain protected without any digital key. The mobile version will only support internal transfers and does not require a MetaMask account. Despite frequent hacks within the Web3 sphere, beginner cryptocurrency holders might be content with PayPal’s familiar interface.

On a side note, the website provides educational articles about cryptocurrency, volatility, and tax regulations.

It’s worth noting that the mobile app allows users to start with a $1 balance. However, the company applies network fees when transferring crypto to or from PayPal accounts. Speaking of which, PayPal has been open to cryptocurrencies for two years now. The platform first introduced the option to buy, sell, and hold digital assets in October 2020.

"Keep in mind that we cannot protect you fromlosses due to market volatility. The transfer of cryptocurrencies on the blockchain is also risky and the transaction can be delayed or lost. Make sure you study carefully to buy and sell correctly,” the company warned customers.

Question about how Transactions get added into Blocks

Hi, I'm currently learning about the details of how Bitcoin works.

There is a couple things I am uncertain of and wanted to ask them here:

Firstly, when exactly is a transaction actually verified and valid and traceable. Is it when a majority of nodes verify its validity or when a miner puts it in the block.

(Also, does the Miner also verify each transaction he puts into a block?)

And secondly, let's say if have 1 BTC in my wallet and decide to make 2 almost simultaneous transactions of each 1 BTC, if a transaction is only valid and traceable if it made it in a block, then what happens if both transactions make it on the block? I don't quite get this concept?

I am greatful for any help!

How many people do you personally know that are full coiners? How old are they?

Just wondering about demographics of those that are heavily invested into Bitcoin. Within your friends/relatives or people you somewhat know, do you actually know anyone that owns a full coin? If so, how old are they?

2 full coiners: 21 and 47

Question about Gemini

Okay so I’m dumb and in no way smarter than any of you. But I’m a bit confused if someone can shed some light.

Why wouldn’t everyone use Gemini as their exchange to purchase? From my knowledge, they have the most secure platform available and have never even come close to being hacked. Completely compliant with NY state bank exams, cybersecurity audits, and the NYDFS. Yeah their fees are a little high, but wouldn’t you want to pay a little more for all that extra security? Am I missing something?

Every time I read through this thread, I hear of a funky one-off exchange that some dumbass lost all their crypto on. Like why are people still buying on these sketchy exchanges when they clearly know the risks?

Genuinely just curious. I am dumb so help me to learn. Thanks fellas

Binance Receives Approval In-Principle to Operate in Kazakhstan

The biggest cryptocurrency exchange has received a regulatory license to operate as a digital asset service provider in France, Bahrain, Spain, and Dubai since 2022. The Astana Financial Services Authority, or AFSA, an independent financial services regulator in Kazakhstan, has allowed the country's largest cryptocurrency exchange, Binance, to operate.

AFSA announced Monday that it had granted Binance in-principle authorization to operate as a digital asset trading facility and provide custody services in the Astana International Financial Centre, a financial hub in Nur-capital Sultan's city. Binance stated in a Monday blog post that it was required to ...

Bitcoin ATMs Vs Crypto Exchanges

Hey guys,

Do you guys have any idea why a crypto ATM with KYC would be more useful than your average crypto exchange? What is the point right? I have heard people say things like "they may not have a bank account" but that's really it...

If you have any other arguments for why an ATM with identity verification would be selected over a crypto exchange then please let me know!

Thanks!
