What's the significance of block rewards halving?

I was wondering if there was a technical reason why the halving happens the way it happens and why it doesn't "slope down" more smoothly for a lack of a better term.

News World’s Largest Bitcoin ATM Firm To Go Public On The Nasdaq. Bitcoin Depot is set to list on the Nasdaq under ticker symbol ‘BTM’ by Q1 2023 through an $855 million SPAC deal.

Beyond adding to BTC's adoption, isn't this the antithesis of Satoshi's vision? This is being reported as a good thing, but I'm not seeing how involving NASDAQ is good for BTC long term.
