Bengal Silicon Valley: four cos respond to EoI

Kolkata, Nov 02 (PTI) Four companies – Reliance Jio, TCS, Cap Gemini and Firstsource Solutions – have so far responded to the EoI floated for setting up units at the Silicon Valley IT hub at New Town here.

West Bengal IT Minister Amit Mitra said that Reliance Jio had sought 40 acres of land, TCS 20 acres, Cap Gemini 10 acres and Firstsource four acres.

“Taking all these together, 74 acres of the 100 acres earmarked for the hub have been applied for”, Mitra said at the TiECon seminar here Friday.

He said the eligibility criteria of these applications would have to be examined before confirming the allotment of land.

The hub was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in August this year.

The land would be given at break-even price to the companies, he said adding that another slot of 100 acres would be offered for the hub.

Mitra said that IT business grew by 79 per cent in terms of the number of IT companies in the state.

“All the IT companies in the state are in an expansion mode. While in 2011, the number of IT professionals working were 80,000, now it stands at around 1.80 lakh”, he said.

The growth in IT exports was 135 per cent from 2010-11 to 2016-17 from Rs 8315 crore to Rs 19,500 crore.

He also said that the IT department and Webel would be holding the global blockchain congress in the city in December.
