Most of the staff know me and help me out. Once in a while customers will call the cops on me or others and the staff will give me a coffee to make it seem like I’m a paying customer. It's nice knowing there are some good people out there”. ​ Sam is determined to turn things around Sam actively posts ads on Craiglist and a Canadian equivalent called https://www.kijiji.ca looking for work. He also checks for new job postings daily. "Most jobs I'll get are labour jobs. No one wants to hire you for an office job when you smell because you haven't changed or showered in days". Sam has recently been working the cold Canadian nights doing snow removal jobs. "It's tough. Being homeless, you don't get to eat or sleep very well. These are two things you need if you're going to do manual labour, especially working 12 or 14 hours overnight in the freezing cold." Sam told me that he recently managed to get a low-fee membership at the YMCA, granting him access to shower facilities, and a locker along with access to the gym. He's also working towards saving enough money to get his own place. ​ Sam on the Importance of Having a Phone when you're homeless One thing that caught my eye was the fact that Sam had a smart phone. "It's the most important thing for a homeless person to have". Sam says the first thing he spends money on is his pay as you go cell phone plan.
