I like to think I'm a veteran. I've been in Crypto since 2012. I've seen some shit, but today I got scammed, and I want to help others see that even self-proclaimed "crypto veterans" like my dumbass can fuck up and make scammers money.
My buddy came over today to bullshit. He brought me a couple beers, and we decided to order some vape cartridges for him. I fire up my Tails laptop to place an order from a reliable champion of the free market and guerrilla fighter of the drug war. It's about .2 BTC. I work on my third beer as he talks my ear off.
I'm a Monero guy. I like my privacy. This vendor only accepts BTC, so I just fire up my phone Monero wallet, and rather than type the address into my phone, I use a QR code like I've done probably 100 times. Search with DuckDuckGo for "bitcoin qr generator" and click one of the top links telling myself, "make sure to verify the address before you send this." Well, he just keeps chatting away, even after my, "hang on man, I've got to pay attention to this". The beers have me looking up and chatting back with him every few seconds.
I send the money to the QR address, see it went through on xmr.to (a XMR to BTC service) and the site still shows my transaction as unfunded.
I pasted my clipboard BTC address into a blockchain explorer, and sure enough, it's definitely got a confirmation. I keep waiting, and then it occurs to me... the fucking QR code generator site fed me their BTC address, also replacing what was on my clipboard with their BTC address, and I had fell for their scam. A review of that address TX history shows a couple other people a day fall for this scam site too. It was only $800ish, but fuck me it still hurts.
Be careful out there.
