Don't let mainstream media "muddy the waters" by misusing the phrase "digital currency".

Andreas Antonopoulos explains very nicely, as usual. He explains what makes Bitcoin better than fiat currencies, and it has nothing to do with the fact that Bitcoin happens to be "digital".
