Cryptocurrency Scam Operating Through Bots Uncovered On Twitter

A massive scam has been uncovered on Twitter surrounding the use of cryptocurrencies. Botnets disguised as valid accounts on the platform have been used to spread this scam. The discovery was unearthed by Duo Security amidst a research. The group uncovered 88 million Twitter accounts in recent months and used AI to isolate these bots on the social media website.

The group found a solitary system of more than 15,000 bots in a three-layered structure that spread the phony giveaway, and further advanced as time go so as to dodge identification. The Duo depicted how the botnet functions in a paper which is to be displayed at the 2018 Black Hat cybersecurity occasion to be held soon.

The bots initially make a false representation of a crypto account that would duplicate the name and profile photo of the true record, as Moneycontrol reports. To spread the phony giveaway trick, the bots would answer to tweets posted by the real accounts, containing a connection to allure Twitter clients to the trick.

Adding to the many-sided quality, many fake accounts took after what the researchers named ‘hub accounts’ and suspect are also followed by the bots in an effort to seem valid. The botnet likewise utilized what is known as ‘amplification bots” – other phony accounts that are utilized to offer preferences to inflate a tweet’s popularity and make the scam appear valid.

The group’s revelations enabled them to associate the bots, and that this could bring about the unwinding of the whole system behind the scam. While Twitter has been making moves to crack down on such crypto scams, Duo believes that their work demonstrates that botnets are as yet dynamic and can be found by clear examination.

Going ahead, Duo intends to open source the methods depicted in the paper with the expectation that new strategies can be created to distinguish malevolent bots, and help keep Twitter and other social platforms safe from such scams.

“We don’t consider the issue settled,” they commented.
