Steve Daines, a junior senator from Montana, United States, has recently alerted that the closure of one of the country’s coal power generator can be harmful to cryptocurrency mining in the state. The Bitcoin mining business is booming in Montana at present.
According to a publisher, all the units of a coal plant called Colstrip, which is situated in the Rosebud County, may shut down by the year 2027. In fact, Senator Daines opines that Montana requires low-cost and reliable energy to continue alluring and retaining Bitcoin mining organizations.
With the increasing demand for Bitcoin mining activities and the diminishing supply of reliable and cheap electricity from coal plants, there could be a big threat in the way of expanding Bitcoin generation. There could be even a bigger threat to supply of energy and prices for the state of Montana. The view was shared by Senator Daines in a meeting for the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
Apart from the low costs of energy, its low temperatures have also made Montana a preferred destination for cryptocurrency mining firms. It is imperative to know that some of North America’s most prominent Bitcoin mining facilities are situated in Western Montana.
Until recently, the Bonner Bitcoin data center has been the largest of its kind in the entire world. The news was shared with the public about a couple of months ago.
Montana Has Been Supportive Of Crypto Mining Activities
An initiative was started last year, which aimed to promote business activities in Missoula, a city in Western Montana, according to Missoula Economic Partnership. It was expected that the Bonner facility will grow from the then figure of only 12,000 mining rigs to as high as 55,000.
The state’s pro-cryptocurrency mining credentials have been also established beyond doubt, according to CCN. Its state government has had the distinction of being in the first in the United States to give a grant for the mining operation of Bitcoin.
