What should the default setting for max blocksize be? I propose 10 TB.

To get more focus on the importance of default values and their subtle influence, I encourage more discussion on this topic.

Default values: Are they more important than we think?

@Peter R: And by default, we set the limit to whatever the majority of miners is currently enforcing.

I believe @Peter R's proposal for default value is just hardening the blocksize cap. The miners feel too safe with status quo. It's just how most humans think. And judging by the past, the miners look to devs to get the "right" number.

@Mengerian: The developers just set a default at what they think is works well before running into software problems.

@Mengerian's proposal for default value is different. This proposal is based on an assumption that the developers know what kind of hardware and network connections the miners and businesses have invested in and make sure they don't have to upgrade.

Both proposals from @Peter R and @Mengerian are trying to create a safe space for miners where they don't have to step up their game to keep up with demand.

My proposal for default value is 10 TB. The miners may adjust it, if they don't like it.

Yes, let’s eliminate the limit. Nothing bad will happen if we do. And if I’m wrong, the bad things would be mild annoyances, not existential risks, much less risky than operating a network near 100% capacity. Gavin Andresen
