Ultimo Digital Technologies (UDT), a company based in Sydney, conducting extensive research on the design and application of blockchain technology for commercial and corporate uses.
The company is envisioning the idea of microchip-based tracking systems. They believe that a tamper-free chip inserted in a product can help to enhance the tracking and information surrounding these products. The company’s programmers are tasked with creating chips that will alert manufacturers on multiple stages of the product’s movement, informing them of the item is opened as well.
The company is presided over by John Baird, who had previously worked with CSIRO as an experimental scientist.
Mr. Braid has confidence in the future of this booming new technological field. “Blockchain is completely flexible it can store any sort of IOT data,” he comments.
Apart from tracking goods, this technology can also be used to enhance animal welfare and improve the living conditions for livestock. UDT is currently partnering with meat and livestock enterprises to help implant this tracking mechanism in cattle. The first of these shipments will be tracked in a journey from Brisbane, Australia to China towards the end of this year.
The company envisions a situation where animals can be traced from the very paddock.
John Braid explains, “We can figure out what stress looks like for a cow, and at a later point in the journey if we can start to see that behavior again we know that the cow is stressed at that point, and something has got to be done about it.”
John Baird also believes that this technology can be used to prevent counterfeit goods. He comments on the situation in China, where a mass of counterfeit goods flood the market and distort business value for the customer.
He remarks, “We’ve talked to China about using it as a way of shipping Chinese goods out of China, ensuring that what goes out of the country has the quality the manufacturer intended.”
