India: McDonald’s Restaurants Using Biodiesel To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emission https://ift.tt/2Kev2zp

The McD restaurants from the south and west India are using biodiesel produced from the used cooking oil to power the delivery trucks in Mumbai. When McDonald’s is down with the cooling oil, instead of throwing it away, Indian franchisee is using it to power delivery trucks.

The biodiesel program started in 2017, and now, it is used in more than 80 McDonald’s restaurants in Mumbai. Till now, more than 35,000 liters of cooking oil has converted into biodiesel, which has saved about 420,000 liters of crude oil per year. Not just in India, in the U.K. also, the McD restaurants have “gone green”. From last 10 years, the delivery lorries have been powered by biodiesel in the U.K. Experts say that such practice has helped save roughly 7,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission per year.

McD Wants To Cut Greenhouse Gas Emission

The company has high ambitions regarding sustainability and the greenhouse gas effect on the environment. Such practice in India is just a start as McDonald’s aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emission by 36 percent in the period 2015–2030. Thus, it has partnered with both suppliers and franchisees to achieve the goal. As per reported by CNBC, Amit Jatia, the vice chairman of Westlife Development, stated in a press release, “We strongly believe in order to protect our planet, we need to opt for sustainable and conservative alternatives in all our operations in India.” He added that this is just a beginning and we aim to continue to champion the cause of planet protection in coming years too. This move was highly appreciated by the Biodiesel Association Of India. Moreover, its President, Sandeep Chaturvedi, urged that other food companies can learn from this initiative and apply this strategy to their business model. The company plans to apply this method throughout India.
