Levels Of Wasted Power In China Fall, Still Several Challenges Remain https://ift.tt/2AyPRFU

China’s renewable power waste levels have decreased, but the major challenge of securing the power grid access to several new clean energy projects said an energy bureau official.

The country’s renewable energy capacity has surged owing to abundant subsidies and ambitious targets. However, the country failed to develop expected transmission capacity to deliver all generated power to its customers, the issue is known as curtailment. To overcome curtailment, the Chinese government has been trying to regulate the timing of construction and has set up a cautionary system that can warn those regions that are suffering from excess capacity growth and force them to slow down the pace of approvals.

By the end of June, China produced roughly 680 gigawatts of renewable energy, which accounts for about 40 percent of the total energy capacity of the country. This year’s renewable and nuclear fuel power generated by China accounts for 66 percent in the first six months, a 5.4 percent increase compared to 2017.

The Situation Has Improved

The vice-director of the renewable energy office of the National Energy Administration, Liang Zhipeng, commented that since last year the situation has improved. However, absorbing this generated renewable energy will remain a problem for a long time.

China’s statistics say that the wind curtailment is at around 5 percent, which is down from 8.7 percent. Also, solar curtailment fell from 3.6 percent to 3.2 percent during the first six months of 2018.

Reuters published the statements made by Liang regarding China’s curtailment issues, which he made during a media briefing on Monday. He said, “over the long period, it is vital to develop a firm strategy to absorb and utilize the renewable energy.” He agreed that the favorable conditions and rise in demand is beneficial for the growth of the energy industry, but it has to face big challenges.

China already has shut down several solar power projects this year to deal with curtailment.
