The city of Ephrata, Washington, recently announced that the city will halt new crypto mining developments for a year. The news also stated that the suspension will only be distressing new crypto operations in Ephrata, the current four operations already present will remain working like it was. Reportedly, according to Wes Crago, Ephrata city administrator, the four crypto operations which contain two at the Port of Ephrata, one in a manufacturing area of the city, and one in a housing area are being moved at the moment.
The choice of the 12-month ban was taken by a city council vote. Six council members voted in favor of the new cryptocurrency regulations, and only one officer named Matt Moore voted against it. As per Moore, the ban may give a threat to the economic development of the city. It will put the entire business “outside the city’s expertise.”
He further added that he does not wish to submit any economic chance big or small. Especially since the factors that determine the viability of cryptocurrency operations are beyond the city’s control. Council member Kathleen Allstot explained that the new ban suggests taking a one-year break in order to see what’s happening in the domain, as well as to check out how crypto mining fits both in Ephrata and the Grant County Public Utility District (PUD), as stated in The Spokesman.
Cryptocurrency miners are disapproved for using huge amounts of power without offering a vital amount of jobs. A number of Grant Cities have forced temporary bans on new cryptocurrency developments, and the Grant County PUD has created a new and significantly higher – electricity rate for cryptocurrency firms.
As per Cointelegraph, in April, Chelan PUD council member’s had appointed staff to apply a suspension on crypto mining following the discovery of illegal mining activities, which were known as illegal loads to law application as power theft.
