Aviation Industry Exploring Blockchain Technology To Improve Efficiency And For Multi-Tasking

Aviation Industry Relying On Blockchain Technology For Improvements

The aviation industry is now exploring the probabilities blockchain technology can offer to improve efficiency and for performing multiple tasks at one time. Reports indicated that there has been a massive rise in the number of chief information officers (CIO)s at the airports and airlines worldwide who are exploring blockchain usage for managing a host of tasks including research, identification of passengers, ticketing, and more.

The SITA report said that 59 percent of airlines are planning beta-testing of blockchain-based programs with the vision to implement them by 2021. The figure has increased by 42 percent from last year. SITA is a technology company providing telecommunications and IT services to companies in the field of aviation.

These findings have been revealed in the 2018 SITA IT Air Transport IT Insights report, which was immediately released after the organization launched “The Aviation Blockchain Sandbox” in June this year. It is a research project aimed at exploring the potential of emerging technology to the industry.

The 2018 report dedicated to aviation industry included participation from over 180 senior IT officials working at topmost airports and airlines. More than 39 percent global airports and 28 percent of global airline passenger traffic were analyzed in this research, Tech Circlereported.

Elsewhere, efforts to bring blockchain into the mainstream of aviation supply chain are now bearing fruits with the Gazpromneft-Aero, the Siberian Airlines brand, S7 Airlines, and Oneworld global aviation forming an alliance to come up with joint aviation fuel smart-contracts (AFSC). According to Aviation Week, the AFSC has been developed and implemented by maintaining blockchain technology as the underlying foundation. Gazpromneft-Aero is a prominent Gazprom Neft aviation refueling business operator.

In collaboration, these three organizations have come up with the latest milestone in the aviation industry in the form of AFSC. This milestone is expected to improve the speed and efficiency while settling the aviation refueling, automating planning and accounting of fuel supplies.
